If you are running a for-profit, non-charity race and cannot tolerate a chance of failure, you might be better off paying the professionals and getting the associated guarantees. That said, we have successfully used fsTimer to time races for a few years now. When using volunteers and free software, there is always a chance of catastrophic failure. For larger races than that, you probably want to consider RFID tags just for the logistics. We have used fsTimer for races of up to 500 people.

We developed fsTimer to time our charity 5k, since it didn't seem right to spend more than $1000 for a professional race timer when that money could be better used to buy food for the hungry. Supports races with handicaps, or multiple start times.Supports races with multiple laps and automatically computes individual lap times and ranks by total time.

Automatically generates nicely formatted race results, including automatically computed divisional results based on the registration database.Supports using a USB barcode scanner to check in racers at the finish line.Only laptops are needed for timing, which is great for races held in places without power outlets (like in a park), and no Internet required. Can import pre-registration information from a spreadsheet. No more long lines the morning of the race! Allows you to use multiple computers for day-of registration, and then automatically merges the information collected on each computer.Has a built-in database for adding and editing registration information.fsTimer will run on Mac, Windows, or Linux, meaning your volunteers will be able to run it regardless of their computing preference.fsTimer makes it easy to do your own race timing using volunteers. If you are organizing a charity 5k, you don't want to blow all of your donations paying for professional race timing. fsTimer is, and always will be, 100% free.An additional $2.20 per registrant is charged for each registrant over 400. Some locations with multiple timing points or high-demand race dates may incur an additional fee. The cost is $1175.00 which covers up to 400 registrants. Performance based results (award standings) are calculated during the event and emailed immediately to the emcee/event director for awards ceremony. Since results are available online in real time for all participants, paper print outs are not created at the event. Results are posted online in real time and can be texted or emailed to your participants (free of charge.) This is available for any number of participants, whether you have 50 finishers or 50,000. Races we time must use RunSignUp as the registration platform. Disposable timing chips are affixed to the back of the race bib and do not need to be collected at the finish line. In that instance, we can issue results based on a runner's net time rather than just the gun time, if you desire.

We use RFID timing system mats and readers and a PC based scoring tool ("The Race Director") to collect a start time and finish time.
#Race timing app upgrade#
If you contract for app-based timing and your registration numbers go over 225 on or before race day, your event will incur a mandatory upgrade to chip timing and the appropriate fees for chip timing will be charged at that time.ī) Chip based timing.

If you KNOW you're going to have more than 225 finishers, we do not offer the app-based timing, but will use chip timing. ( This is works best for 225 and fewer registrants due to the density of participants at the finish line. We do not PRINT these results on race day participants can view their times online through their smart phones immediately after they finish.
#Race timing app software#
The app software scores the event and posts the results in real time. With that model, all participants are timed off of the GUN time of the event and each individual finish time is captured at the finish line by our timer who uses an iPad app to record the finish time and bib number. We generally use app-based timing for events of up to 225 registrants. We use a tablet and the Webscorer app to score the event - see a list of recent races and their results timed in this manner HERE.
